True and false statements regarding Ayurveda

  1. Ayurvedic medicines harm the kidneys : The answer is false. there are two types of medicines in ayurvedic system, one being herbal and the other is mineral based. The mineral based medications if taken without a prescription and if taken in huge quantities on self treatment can harm the kidneys and other organs due to the presence of heavy metals. But in a controlled dose, it is considered as best for many autoimmune diseases and conditions such as paraplegia and hemiplegia.

2. Ayurveda is quite slow in treating the patient: The answer is true, Ayurveda is based on treating the root cause rather than doing a symptomatic treatment, hence the cure is deep seated and also prevents re-occurence if the do’s and don’t followed correctly.

3. Ayurveda medicines are harmless and doesn’t have any sideeffects: The answer is false, if taken in non regulated quantities without the actual prescribed dose, it can have minor side effects such as digestive disorders, dizziness, headache etc.

4. Are all ayurvedic medicines are chemical free: The answer is false. The medicines are basically of herbal origin and can perish in no time, hence tablets, syrups, other cosmetics always contain preservatives (some may even have sodium benzoate and parabens) and binding materials such as magnesium stearate etc.

5. Ayurvedic doctors are not qualified: The answer is false, the doctors practicing Ayurvedic system of medicine have completed a course called as Bachelors in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (which is a 5 and a half year course) having same time period of MBBS and includes almost all subjects in the regular MBBS course with the ayurvedic concepts of the same. However beware of the quacks without any qualification who practice this herbal medicine.

6. Ayurveda has limitations when it comes to Emergency medicine: The answer is true, ayurveda has certain limitations in comparison with modern medicine when it comes to emergency patient management as the herbal medicines are always slower than any synthetic new generation drugs.

7. Ayurveda cures permanently: The answer is questionable, Yes ayurveda cures permanently if and only if the patient follows the strict do’s and don’ts correctly post treatment. Any change in the same leads to re-occurence.

8. Ayurveda does not follow surgical practices: The answer is False. The first surgery in the world was done by an Ayurvedacharya called Maharshi Susruta, the techniques used by him is world wide accepted for certain procedures called rhinoplasty and other surgeries under plastic surgery and cataract surgeries. However currently in some states doctors practicing ayurveda are allowed to perform surgical procedures and in some states due to regulations they are not.

9. Ayurveda cures diabetes and hypertension: The answer is false, like any system of medicine, ayurveda too can control these conditions, however these being lifestyle disorders and some being hereditary, we need to help ourselves too in controlling these, such as exercise, reduce stress, have good sleep etc. If we don’t help ourselves first, nothing can completely help us.

10. Ayurveda can slow down ageing: The answer is false, nothing can play around with genetics and ageing. The therapies and medications involving rejuvenation can make you the real you! Reduce your pigmentation, reduce your dark circles, make your digestion intact, improve your blood circulation, reduce your stress and hairfall, strengthen your immune system etc. When all this is attained, what else and why else would someone want to be more young as all these things are already well addressed.
